by Nicholas Zakas on Jun 20, 2013

After consulting with several companies on performance related issues, it became clear that one of the biggest performance issues facing websites today is the sheer amount of JavaScript needed to power the page. The demand for more interactive and responsive applications has driven JavaScript usage through the roof. It’s quite common for large sites to end up with over 1 MB of JavaScript code on their page even after minification. But do today’s web applications really need that much JavaScript?"

InfoQ: A Brief Introduction to REST

"Most introductions to REST start with the formal definition and background. I’ll defer this for a while and provide a simplified, pragmatic definition: REST is a set of principles that define how Web standards, such as HTTP and URIs, are supposed to be used (which often differs quite a bit from what many people actually do). The promise is that if you adhere to REST principles while designing your application, you will end up with a system that exploits the Web’s architecture to your benefit. In summary, the five key principles are:
Give every “thing” an ID
Link things together
Use standard methods
Resources with multiple representations
Communicate statelessly"

Learn REST: A Tutorial: 12.5. Using REST in PHP

"Modern versions of PHP make it trivial to GET web pages: any file-access function (even include!) works seamlessly with URLs, too. Thus, you can use fopen, file_get_contents, and any other file-reading function to issue GET requests."

"Tonic is an open source less is more, RESTful Web application development PHP library designed to do things 'the right way', where resources are king and the library gets out of the way and leaves the developer to get on with it."

A Beginner’s Introduction to HTTP and REST | Nettuts+

"The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the life of the Web. It’s used every time you transfer a document, or make an AJAX request. But HTTP is a relative unknown among web developers. This introduction will demonstrate how the set of design principles, known as REST, underpin HTTP, and allow you to embrace its fullest power by building interfaces which can be used from almost any device or operating system."

About - cufon - GitHub

"Cufón aims to become a worthy alternative to sIFR, which despite its merits still remains painfully tricky to set up and use. To achieve this ambitious goal the following requirements were set:

1. No plug-ins required – it can only use features natively supported by the client
2. Compatibility – it has to work on every major browser on the market
3. Ease of use – no or near-zero configuration needed for standard use cases
4. Speed – it has to be fast, even for sufficiently large amounts of text

And now, after nearly a year of planning and research we believe that these requirements have been met."

Interesting alternative for web fonts.

A List Apart: Articles: Dynamic Text Replacement

"Text styling is the dull headache of web design. There are only a handful of fonts that are universally available, and sophisticated graphical effects are next to impossible using only standard CSS and HTML.

We can forget all that nonsense. No more image or span tags, no more id attributes or wasted time in Photoshop, and no more messy CSS hacks. Using JavaScript and PHP, we can generate accessible image-headings using any font we like. And we don’t have to change the structure of our HTML or CSS at all."

Fascinating solution. I am going to try it.

How to Develop Web Applications with Ajax

"In recent months, a technique that had not been widely supported in the past has become available to a large number of web surfers, giving developers more freedom to develop cutting-edge web applications. These applications, which asynchronously retrieve XML data via JavaScript, are affectionately known as “Ajax applications” (Asynchronous Javascript and XML applications). In this article, I will explain how to retrieve a remote XML file via Ajax to update a web page, and as this series continues, I will discuss more ways that Ajax technology can be used to take your web applications to the next level."

Content Language Negotiation

Content language negotiation is a mechanism to allow visitors to see a website in their preferred language all from the same URL. This mechanism has been present in the HTTP protocol for years, but is fairly seldom used.

A list of references of content language negotiation.

Dan's Web Tips: Languages
Since "World Wide" is part of the name of the Web, it was never intended to be an English-only medium. You can use any language in your Web sites, and various facilities have been added to the standards of the Web to allow you to indicate which languages you are using for the benefit of indexers and translators, and even to intelligently serve different language versions of your pages to suit user preferences. This page describes some of these techniques.

Language Negotiation Notes
Some notes about the negotiation of natural language on the WWW. This page makes no attempt to be a complete tutorial on the topic. It only discusses a selection of issues that seem to keep coming up in discussions.

Apache HTTP Server Content Negotiation
Apache's support for content negotiation has been updated to meet the HTTP/1.1 specification. It can choose the best representation of a resource based on the browser-supplied preferences for media type, languages, character set and encoding. It is also implements a couple of features to give more intelligent handling of requests from browsers which send incomplete negotiation information.

Techniques for multilingual Web
Special techniques are needed when creating a Web site so that information is available in different languages according to user selection. This document especially discusses the language negotiation mechanism developed for such purposes and, as a necessary complement to it, linking to versions in different languages.

Flags as a symbol of language -- stupidity or insult?
Very often flags are used as symbols of languages, on the Web and elsewhere. For instance, a Web page might contain an "English flag" which acts as a link to an English version of a document (which itself is in another language). It is usually bad practice to use images as anchors of links, but this document concentrates on the theme why flags are particularly unsuitable anchors.

Create Index file in each subfolder

If you use subdirectories or folders as a part of your website, you might be revealing more than you want to.

If a directory (folder) does not have an index page inside, many servers will
then show a complete listing of everything you have inside that folder.

If you have a website www.mysite.com with an images folder at www.mysite.com/images what happens if someone enters www.mysite.com/images? If they get a list of images, add an index.htm file (or the Web Hosting server standard) into the subdirectory.

Website Construction

If you design a website on paper and give it to two different website developers, they will develop it differently even though both might look the same.

Design might include CSS, or just HTML.
Database could be any database product.
PHP or ASP could have been used.

It might not be easy to tell that underneath they are so different. That is why construction of the website is treated separately from website design.
